About the Author: Julie Welch (Runtz), CPA, CFP, is a shareholder and the Director of Tax Services for Meara Welch Browne, P.C., a Kansas City based CPA firm. She graduated from William Jewell College with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business Administration and obtained a Masters in Taxation degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Ms. Welch consults with hundreds of individuals and small businesses annually about tax planning. She has written numerous articles and presented tax planning seminars to various groups throughout the country. Since 1998, she has served as a discussion leader for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' National Tax Education Program. For ten years she has served on the AICPA s planning committee for the Tax Planning Strategies for the High-Income Individual conference, where she is also a frequent speaker. In addition, she serves on the Taxation Committee of the Missouri Society of CPAs and has served as the Treasurer of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Financial Planning Association. She is a frequent columnist for CPA Magazine and the Journal of Financial Planning. Randy Gardner, LLM, CPA, CFP, is a Professor of Taxation and Director of the Personal Financial Planning Program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. In addition to teaching, Randy is a tax and estate planning attorney at Estate Plan, Inc. with offices in Laguna Beach and Irvine, California, and Overland Park, Kansas.
