About this title

Synopsis:

"WITHOUT THEM YOU CANNOT WIN A BATTLE, WITHOUT THEM YOU CAN DO NOTHING AT ALL." These are the words of Field Marshal Montgomery, speaking of the infantry, and of all infantry formations they apply most squarely to the Foot Regiments. At last, J. A. Miles has dedicated a scholarly work to the ones everybody takes for granted: the men of the Foot Regiments. From the beginnings of Britain's modern army in Cromwell's day, Miles spotlights and clarifies the role the Foot Regiments played in every major battle in which the British Army took part until 1900.

About the Author:

J A Miles was born in London in 1938. He spent his National Service in the Royal Military Police before qualifying as a structural engineer when he worked on the civil construction of three nuclear power stations. Miles then moved to the Channel Tunnel where he built a factory on the Isle of Grain for the manufacture of concrete tunnel linings, before moving to Denmark. He retired in 1989. Throughout his life, Miles read many histories of battles and wondered who the 42nd Foot, the 19th Foot etc. were. In 1972, he decided to investigate their origins and actions – hence this book, mainly through information from regimental secretaries and museum curators, who were most helpful.
