We offer a woodcut book illustration of the city of Salzburg by the German physician, humanist, historian and cartographer Hartmann Schedel. Titled Salczburga from the Liber Chronicarum the first edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle printed in 1493 by Anton Koberger. The woodcuts in the book were engraved by Michael Wohlgemuth and Wilhem Pleydenwurff. Printed on handmade laid paper with Latin text on verso and some small woodcut illustrations of popes and kings. The image size is 9 1/2" x 20 5/8", the paper size is 10" x 21 5/8". Hartmann Schedel (1440 1514) was one of the first cartographers to use the printing press. Condition: Some toning and ink loss where the centerfold has been repaired and a horizontal crease in the middle of the image and a very faint diagonal crease on the left. There is a faint inscription in graphite at the top left: "zatola". The sides and bottom have full margins intact, the top of the paper has been cut (not affecting image) otherwise good.
