About this Item

1536 Chiromancy della Rocca Cocles Palmistry Necromancy Prophecy Occult Science INCREDIBLY RARE Title / 160 Engraved Woodcuts! Bartolomeo della Rocca, also known as Cocles (1467 – 1504) was a scholar of chiromancy, physiognomy, astrology, and Geomancy who lived in Bologna, Italy during the rule of the Bentivoglio. This incredible work by Cocles is an original classic treatise on medicine, physiognomy and chiromancy (palm-reading). This book is filled with woodcut engravings of facial characteristics as well as palms marked with instructions for palm reading. This edition has 160 incredible figures, some even on how to communicate with the dead! This book is exceedingly rare! We do not find any examples of this book for sale elsewhere! However, we do find other early 16th-century Cocles works for sale for nearly $4,900! (Sotheby’s sold this same 1536 ed for $747 in 1980. The most recent sold example of this book was 1534 ed, no price was given.) Main author: Bartolommeo della Rocca Cocles Other names: Andre Corve; Johann Albert Title: Barptolomae Coclitis Bononiensis, naturalis philosophiae ac medicinae doctoris, Physionomiæ & chiromantiae compendium. Published: Argentorati : Apud Ioannem Albertum, mense Sept. anno MDXXXVI. [1536] Language: Latin Notes on physiognomy: Physiognomy is the interpretation of outward appearance, especially the features of the face, to discover a person’s predominant temper and character. Physiognomy has also been used as a kind of divination and is often associated with astrology. Coclès, like others before and after him, tried to create a science out of something each of us does from time to time: judge a person by his or her facial characteristics. Physiognomists like Coclès are wont to say things such as “people with snub noses are vain, untruthful, unstable, unfaithful and seducers.” Cocles extended the pseudo scientific analysis to palm reading, writing one of the most enduring and influential text on Chiromancy.
