About the Book

Bibliographic Details

Title: 1573 Original Latin Bible Leaf: BIBLIA, AD ...

Publisher: Gulielmum Rouillium, Lyon

Publication Date: 1573

Binding: Leaf

Book Condition: Very Good

Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket

This leaf measures roughly 6 1\2 inches by 4 7\8 inches. This is the first page of the Gospel According to Mark with a woodcut illustration depicting Mark in a European setting transcribing his gospel and his feet resting on a lion. Printed on both sides with a total of two woodcuts. Contains the text of Matthew 28:6-Mark 1:.15. The illustration on the verso depicts Jesus rising triumphantly from the grave (much to the horror of the Roman soldiers standing nearby), albeit a 16th century looking casket is involved. An unusual opportunity to own a leaf from a 16th century Bible, from the same year the Confederation of Warsaw was signed which guaranteed religious freedom (particularly to Protestants), being the high water mark of the Reformation in Poland. Printed nine years after John Calvin's death and only one year after the death of John Knox. Holes for the binding threads in the gutter of the left margin. Some browning to the leaf. Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 010179
