Description:

1664 Machiavelli Discourses on Titus Livy Italian Renaissance Roman History ROME Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469 1527) was an Italian historian, politician, diplomat, philosopher, humanist, and writer based in Florence during the Renaissance. The Discourses on Livy is a work of political history and philosophy written in the early 16th century (ca. 1517) by the Italian writer and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. The title identifies the work s subject as the first ten books of Livy s Ab urbe condita, which relate the expansion of Rome through the end of the Third Samnite War. Titus Livius Patavinus (64 BC AD 17) known as Livy in English was a Roman historian who wrote a monumental history of Rome and the Roman people Ab Urbe Condita Libri (Books from the Foundation of the City) covering the period from the earliest legends of Rome before the traditional foundation in 753 BC through the reign of Augustus in Livy s own time. He was on familiar terms with the Julio-Claudian dynasty, advising Augustus s grandnephew, the future emperor Claudius, as a young man not long before 14 AD in a letter to take up the writing of history.
