About this Item

1693 1st OXFORD ed Quintilian Oratoria Rhetoric Public Speeches ROME Gibson One of the earliest books on teaching public speaking! Marcus Fabius Quintilianus, or Quintilian, was a 1st-century Roman scholar most remembered for his theoretical textbook, Institutio Oratoria . This work deals with the foundations and development of teaching orations and public speaking. Quintilian s most important point was that speeches provided the message of the speaker being a good man and that there is a direct correlation between the quality of a speech and the quality of a man s character. This book was known to have significant influence on Martial, Seneca, Juvenal, and Saint Augustine, who all credited Quintilian with focusing their orations. This first edition, published in 1693, was the first to be edited with notes and supplemented by Edmund Gibson. Item number: #3336 Price: $750 QUINTILIAN, Marcus Fabius M.
