About this Item

1715 Turkish Spy Ottoman Persian Empire Constantinople Turkey Illustrated 6v SET INCREDIBLE Foldout Copper Plates / See photos! Giovanni Paolo Marana or sometimes Jean-Paul Marana (1642 – 1693) was a noble Genoese, who participated in 1672 in an unsuccessful conspiracy for passing the town of Savona under the rule of the Dukes of Savoy, moved to France in 1683. It is mutually agreed upon that he is the leading author of the work Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy. Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy is a collection of fictional letters claiming to have been written by an Ottoman spy named “Mahmut”, in the French court of Louis XIV. Language: French Notes: The Spy is a fictitious narrative and collection of letters which the author pretends was translated from Arabic into its original language, Italian. This ‘external’ perspective was directly inspired by Montesquieu and his Persian Letters. While Giovanni Paolo Marana is considered the main author of this work, many other names have been attributed to other portions of it including Barbier, Daniel Defoe, Midgley, William Bradshaw, and Roger Manley. Marana is typically only credited with the first 5 volumes of this work. These other authors are considered those who dealt with the continuation of the work. 20 engravings including 6 folding plates of city views Gallipolis Constantinople Perpignan Casal Valenciennes Dunkirk The letters cover the period of 1637 to 1682 in France, from the last years of the Regency of Anne of Austria and Cardinal Richelieu through the long reign of Louis XIV and his minister Cardinal Mazarin. The Letters form a rambling journal of gossip on current politics and satire on society. Mahmut sends reports from Paris to Constantinople on politics and current events in France, but corresponds privately on other subjects including religion, and adds stories and anecdotes for diversion Complete 6 volumes FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE Wear: wear as seen in photos Binding: tight and secure leather binding Pages: complete with all pages; plus indexes, prefaces, and such Illustrations: 20 exquisite copper engravings Publisher: A Cologne : Chez Erasme Kinkius, 1715-1716.
