1744 Josiah Bartlett signed schoolbook. Signer of Declaration of Independence New Hampshire. A Short Introduction of Grammar; Latin Tongue.

I could not find any records of a Josiah Bartlett signature prior to the 1750's. The book comes from the descendents of the Bartlett family. Two titles, bound together, with a schoolboy signature of the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. The inscription on the front blank reads, "Josiah Bartlett" and in Latin is "He bought this book in the year 1744." see photos. So, he (Dec 1729-May 1795) purchased this book new or almost new. He would have been 14 or 15 years old at this time. See Wikipedia, which states that he learned Greek and Latin by age 17. Also signed by his son, " Levi Bartlett, Kingston, 1778" on the rear pastedown. Levi would be learning latin from his father's schoolbook, and Levi was 15 years old at this time. Josiah moved to Kingston New Hampshire in 1750.This Latin Grammar book was purchased from Devin Moisan Auctions, in Epping, New Hampshire in August of 2022. Mr. Moisan had been auctioning the estate of one of the decendents of Josiah Bartlett. The book is in a very used, poor-fair condition, with crude boards and spine. Bound with " Lily's Rules Construed." Missing pages 61-64, and perhaps a page at the back.otherwise, it appears complete. No locations on Oclc of this edition.
