THE CANDIDATE : A POEM, by [Charles] CHURCHILL. LONDON: Printed for the Author, and sold by W. Flexney, G. Kearsly, C. Henderson, J. Coote, J. Gardiner, J. Almon and A. Moran, under the Piazzas, Covent-Garden, M DCC LXIV (1764). FIRST EDITION of this slim satirical poem, one of the last works by the short-lived English poet and satirist Charles Churchill (b. 1732, d. 1764). Disbound leaves, 8.5x11", text pages are loose but present and laid together in correct order. Pagination: , 38. Lacking the rear blank leaf, otherwise complete, including half title. Collated with a copy held in the rare book room of the University of California, now digitized online. Condition: Disbound, as noted above; the first and last page are sunned and toned; all the page edges are worn and chipped, not affecting any printed text; there is an early signature on the first page (R. Bunce?); each leaf has a handwritten page number in its upper front corner, starting with 65 and running consecutively to 103, with the last leaf's number lacking, probably chipped off. I do not know the reason for the numbering, perhaps these leaves were bound at one time with other works?. Bookseller Inventory #
