This newspaper is dated Oct 26, 1791 and Washington gave his SOU on Oct 25, 1791 !! The Gazette of the US was the unofficial "Official" newspaper of the Federalist dominated US Congress, and thus was given the first access to important state documents and speeches. This speech includes the first public announcement that a site has definitely been selected for the new Federal Capital City, the District of Columbia, and was to be built ".on lands on both sides of the River Potowmac (sic) and the towns of Alexandria and George-Town." This announcement also reports that ".(the) city has been.laid out agreably to a plan which will be placed before Congress." This is the BEST newspaper in which to have President George Washington's third State of the Union Address, and is a key issue in the history of the formation of the Federal Capital city, the District of Columbia. Text of the SOU Address includes: ".Pursuant to the authority contained in the several acts on that subject, a district of 10 miles square for the permanent seat of the Government of the United State has been fixed and announced by proclamation, which district will comprehend lands on both sides of the river Potowmac and the towns of Alexandria and Georgetown. A city has also been laid out agreeably to a plan which will be placed before Congress, and as there is a prospect, favored by the rate of sales which have already taken place, of ample funds for carrying on the necessary public buildings, there is every expectation of their due progress."
