Description:

West Indies (Caribbean, Mosquito Shore, Jamaicae, Windward Islands, The Martyrs Reef, Great Bank of Bahama, Virgin Islands, Gulf of Venezuela, Yucatan Peninsula) Issued c.1808, New York, by John Low (plate first engraved 1799) Fine and uncommon old engraved map with attractive hand color. Originally issued in 1799, this interesting engraved map was re-issued in 1808-10 by Low of NY who simply re-used the original engraved plate which had been used in 1799 to publish it within Payne's Geographical Grammar. He simply removed the Payne imprint across the top, then had his "New Encyclopedia" engraved to replace it (this is evident by visual inspection). As noted by Wheat & Brun, Leeward islands is used for two different chains of islands and Jamaica is spelled with an "e" at the end. The explanation key for colonial possessions is at bottom left. We note the curious large mountain chain running down the middle of the top half of Florida. Essentially an 18th century American map, slightly altered by an engraver for re-issue in c.1808 by the same publisher. A picture is worth a thousand words. The photos are a major part of the item description. Please examine them closely, as what you see is what we will send you. [note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.]. Map remains very well preserved. Overall clean, map displays a nice visual appearance. Paper and image remains overall clean & sound. Old maps & prints often display small minor repairs on the back, could have uneven blank margins, might have extraneous fold-lines or other small minor age flaws which do not detract from the visual appeal or value. Condition is carefully considered in arriving at our price. Great antique map entirely worthy of hanging for display. A depiction captured in a manner entirely unique to this era. Original fold lines as issued. Sheet measures c. 10 1/8" H x 13 1/2" W. Printed area measures c. 7 1/4" H x 12 3/8" W Wheat & Brun, Maps Published in America Before 1800, 700 Tooleys Dictionary of Mapmakers, v. 3, p. 160[R3379]. Bookseller Inventory #
