He was appointed mate in the Marine Hospital at Hampton, VA in 1779. In June of 1780 he was appointed surgeon of a Virginia artillery regiment with which he marched to South Carolina and was present at the defeat of General Gates. Having been taken with a dangerous illness, he was ordered by medical and other officers to take a sea voyage. During this voyage he was captured and taken prisoner to Antigua where he was a prisoner until 1782. He was credited with 2 months service in the Virginia artillery on the southern expedition, and 3 years’ service as surgeon in the Virginia State line. • The volume is identified inside the front cover in period ink: “W C Seldon.” [original owner] • Dr. Wilson Cary Seldon (1761-1835) was a prominent physician from Leesburg, VA. He was a member of the VA Assembly in 1793, and also was a vestryman at Leesburg in the Episcopal Church. • The volume was then presented in 1839 by his son (also Wilson Cary Selden) to his friend John W. Simpson. The father was dead by then and his son spelled the last name “Selden” instead of “Seldon.” There are 2 ink inscriptions: o “John W. Simpson May 30th, 1839 Leesburg, VA” o “Presented to Mr. Jno Simpson by his friend April 1839 WC Selden” • W. C. Selden, Jr. was a Southern planter. The identity of John W. Simpson of Leesburg is unknown. Further research is needed there. There is a 3rd generation W C Selden who served in the 12th VA Cavalry during the Civil War.
