About this Item

Approx. 8" x 6.75" ledger. 144 pages and 4 misc. loose receipts on blue paper. Ledger has brownish marbled paper covered boards with brown leather spine and corners. All but a couple of pages used in the ledger to record disbursements in various ports of call and personal accounts. The Ship "Warsaw" sailed to several places including Mobile, New Orleans, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, Havana, Liverpool, Hamburg, and New Castle. One of the pages lists crew members of the third voyage in 1838 as; A. C. Bennett (Mate), Andrew Smith (Second Mate), W. Warren (Steward), J Batt??, Seaman - Samuel Deman, Isaac Navy, John Gardiner, Wm. Johnson, and Thos. Miller. A few pages records contraction costs. On one page is written "Rochester 1849. School district No. 16 Wm. P. Wendell being Wendell & Elias S. Chase will? form a committee to build a school house in said district." Another page is titled "Building a store in 1850." The misc. blue loose receipt papers indicate costs of constructing the school house. Paid, recorded items listed in the ledger include payments to the Ship Master, cook(s), crew members, blacksmith, carpenters, etc. Items purchased include ship supplies, marketing, boarding, fees, "jackscrews", beef, potatoes, whiskey, tobacco, cotton, medicines, wood, labor washing ship, etc. This ledger references several names. It is possible the ledger belonged to William P. Wendell or the Wendell family. The Wendell family name is mentioned several times for receiving payments. A recent owner of the ledger indicated in pencil on the front paste "Wendell Family, Rochester, Mass." The Ship Warsaw has references on the internet but further research is needed to identify the builder, owner, and history of the Ship. One reference indicating the Ship "Warsaw" is found in the book written by. Bookseller Inventory # 6912
