About this Item

Charles DeKay Cooper (1769-1831) was an Albany physician, lawyer, member of the Erie Canal Commission, and NY Secretary of State who, through a letter published in the Albany Register, is thought to have been the final catalyst for the fatal duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. The 65 pen and ink maps (with watercolor highlights), bound in two volumes, are in the hand of Albany City Surveyor George W. Carpenter and were apparently copied for Cooper's son from the "maps of the property belonging to the estate of Mrs. Margaret Cooper." Of particular interest are the numerous later annotations about the disposition of various lots, for example: "This lot was taken in 1848 by the City for the Steam Boat Square." and "Charles D. Cooper [son] in Dec. 1870 sold and conveyed the right and franchise of Dockage to the New Jersey Steam Boat Co. for $600 cash." General wear to the boards and binding, and light soil/occasional small stains on interior pages. Numerous historical annotations in both pencil and ink. Generally very good.
