A sharp and clear oval Woodburytype portrait of Samuel Plimsoll; approx. 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" size, on the original heavy paper 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" sheet; Samuel Plimsoll (1824-1898) British politician and shipping reformer, promoter of greater safety on ships, primarily concerning the fatal overloading of merchant vessels at the time and the loss of life of seamen - hence the "Plimsoll Line" found on ships demarking loading capacities.
