Description:

MARK TWAIN SCRAPBOOK filled with paper memorabilia of EDWARD COOKINGHAM of PORTLAND, OREGON. The scraps are from 1877-1914, and are adhered to the scrapbook in mostly chronological order. This is a deluxe MARK TWAIN'S SCRAPBOOK, with leather spine and corners, gilt titling to the spine, and green cloth covered boards. It measures 10x12 inches and the spine is 2 inches wide. There is the MARK TWAIN'S SCRAPBOOK label on the inside front cover. It measures 2 3/8 x 3 1/4 inches. The inner pages are coated with three columns of Mark Twain's patented water sensitive adhesive (you did not need glue, just some water to dampen the column area where you want to apply a paper scrap). The MARK TWAIN'S SCRAPBOOK, especially the deluxe model, is itself collectible. There is currently one online for $275, but please do your own research. They can be searched under MARK TWAIN SCRAPBOOK and MARK TWAIN'S SCRAPBOOK. There are many listed that are "in the style of" Mark Twain's Scrapbook, but those are not the same. However, what makes THIS scrapbook extra special is that it was the scrapbook of EDWARD COOKINGHAM (1860-1948) who was born and raised in NEW YORK, studied law for awhile in ALBANY, and then settled in PORTLAND, OREGON in 1882 at the age of 22. He remained in Portland, Oregon, for the rest of his life. The scrapbook contains early school report cards, many clippings from newspapers where he is mentioned, dinner menus where he was a toastmaster, a few handwritten pages (perhaps school work, as one full page in Latin), still more newspaper clippings which mention his various appointments, promotions, banking relationships, etc., opera house invitation notices (he was President of the Portland Symphony, and on numerous boards, both corporate and civic), his wedding announcement (he married Gertrude Whitehouse), an invitation to a Dinner with William Howard Taft, President of the United States, that was held at the Portland Commercial Club, a some newspaper articles that include his photo, etc. 36 of the scrapbooks 152 numbered pages have memorabilia attached to them. In addition, there is LOTS of memorabilia laid in at the rear, including Pullman Carriage Tickets, many Newspaper articles relating to his Portland banking career, some clippings relating to his children, etc. These would fill many of the unused pages. All the scrapbook pages, filled and unfilled, are present. Also laid in is an ORIGINAL 8x9.5 inch photograph on a 11x14 inch cardboard mount. The photo is of the PORTLAND ACADEMY BASEBALL TEAM. Prescott Cookingham, Edward Cookingham's son, went to the Portland Academy High School and it is likely he is in this photograph as there are a couple clippings that talk about Prescott Cookingham as a player on the Portland Academy team. The photograph is circa 1914. GOOD condition. The scrapbook's covers are scraped at the leather folds, spine ends and corners; the top front spine fold has a 1/2 inch tear; otherwise the scrapbook and its inner pages are solid and nice. The MARK TWAIN'S SCRAPBOOK label on the inside front cover is bright, clean and clear. The paper items that have been adhered to the inner pages are in generally good condition, the articles have browned as normal, a few items are creased, some have offsetting, overall they are bright, clean, clear and fully legible. The Portland Academy baseball team photograph is in Very Good condition. You can find lots about Edward Cookingham of Portland Oregon, and about the Mark Twain's Scrapbook, on the Internet.
