Here is a handsomely bound collection of several issues of Harper's Franklin Square Library, which appears to have been specially bound for someone a long time ago. The issues within contain the biographies and other information about Edward Bulwer, Lord Lytton, Victor Hugo, and George Eliot. This is a large, thick volume with a handsomely bound spine. The contents are as follows: 1. The Life, Letters, and Literary Remains of Edward Bulwer, Lord Lytton, by His Son, The Earl of Lytton (Owen Meredith), I. Autobiography PART I, 80 PAGES 2. The Life, Letters, and Literary Remains of Edward Bulwer, Lord Lytton, by His Son, The Earl of Lytton (Owen Meredith), II. Biography PART II, 86 PAGES 3. Victor Hugo and His Time by Alfred Barbou (profusely illustrated with 120 drawings, with many by Victor Hugo) 140 PAGES 4. George Eliot's Life Related in Her Letters and Journals Arranged and Edite by Her Husband J.W. Cross Volume I, 82 PAGES 5. George Eliot's Life Related in Her Letters and Journals Arranged and Edite by Her Husband J.W. Cross Volume II, 76 PAGES 6. George Eliot's Life Related in Her Letters and Journals Arranged and Edite by Her Husband J.W. Cross Volume III, 76 PAGES (making the complete 3-volume set) 7. Character Readings from "George Eliot" Selected and Arranged by Nathan Sheppard 86 PAGES This comes to a combined total of 626 pages, a nice collection of material on these literary giants, all part of the Harper Franklin Square Library, with the various issues dating 1878-1883. The pages are nice and clean with NO markings, though there is some age toning and the vertical crease from each standalone issue being folded at one time is still gently visible. The binding is nice and solid, front and back hinges are fully solid. The bookbinding was done by A. & J. Stevenson, NewInn Entry, Dundee (small bookbinder's stamp inside the back cover). The spine and corners are a nice black leather, with five raised bands, gilt trim, maroon spine labels with gilt gold lettering. The high points and edges of the spine show rubbing and wear, as do the corners and some edges. Overall this book is in Very Good condition for its age. Quite a nice volume for the serious literary collector. Bookseller Inventory #
