Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania for 1886. In Four Parts. PART I ONLY. Pittsburgh Coal Region. By the State Geologist. Harrisburg: Published by The Board of Commissioners for the Geological Survey, 1887. 573 pages + publisher's adverts. Complete with the two loose maps. Large fold-out map of Southwest Pennsylvania measures approximately 40 x 38". Original signed binding measuring 9 x 6", 8vo. In fair condition. Grey cloth boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Binder's blind stamp at top edge of front board: "Clarence M Busch. State Binder." Spine tanned from shelf-wear, gilt lettering illegible. Front gutter cracked with exposed binding mesh. Bookplate on front paste-down: "Compliments of Charles Gainesvilles, House of Representatives." Light off-setting on front end-page from bookplate. Normal to light toning throughout text-blocks. Fold-out plates overall clean and intact. Loose maps are both intact; Southwest PA exhibits more toning and some tearing at creases. Binding of text-block remains intact. Please see photos. Compiled by Joseph Peter Lesley (1819-1903), an American geologist. He made extensive and important researches in the coal, oil and iron fields of the United States and Canada and became state geologist of Pennsylvania in 1874. From 1872 to 1878 he served as a professor of geology at the University of Pennsylvania; after 1886 he was emeritus professor. He served Bessemer ironworks in Sheffield for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and in 1867 he was one of ten commissioners sent by the U.S. Senate to the World s Fair in Paris. He was one of the original members of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1884 he was president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Part I only, Pittsburgh Coal Mines.
