A good likeness in colors of The Right Hon. Earl Russell; lithographed with a facsimile signature below; paper 8 x 11" sheet approx. overall; taken ".from a Photograph by the Messrs. Elliott & Fry"; Lord John Russell (1792-1878) British prime minister and author; by the end of his long political life, became a kind of dinosaur and basically forgotten; however, ".Towards the end of the twentieth century, however, when British politicians appeared to have much to learn from other more prosperous nations about civil rights, the toleration of dissent, and respect for education, there was a revival of interest in the whigs. The works of Richard Brent (1987), Peter Mandler (1990), and Jonathan Parry (1993) struck an increasingly appreciative note. Nineteenth-century whigs, it was then clear, got many things right. They had a rational understanding of the relationship between the past and the present. They dismissed the political superstitions of Edmund Burke, and welcomed new ideas and the dialectical turns of debate. They favoured inquiry and the collection of statistics. They took a positive and realistic view of what could be achieved by legislation and government. For a generation they-and Lord John Russell most of all-practised a high-minded and disinterested form of politics which stands to this day as the high-water mark of parliamentary government." (John Prest in the DNB); this image from the series of biographical portraits in "The Modern Portrait Gallery." 1st series, by this publisher; light wear; portrait of the British politician in very good condition.
