About this Item

This piece, created by Max Klinger in 1893, features a woman with her right arm raised above her head, looking directly out at the viewer. It is a strong pose, and a companion to the word "Secession", written across the top of the piece in large letters. The image measures 11 1/2" x 9 3/4"; with the blank margins, the paper is 19" x 13" overall. The Secession movements took hold in several European cities at the end of the nineteenth century, breaking away from more traditional academic art to embrace more progressive styles, and Max Klinger was a strong supporter and member of the movement in both Munich (formed in 1892) and, more famously, Vienna (formed 1897). Max Klinger (1857-1920) was a German sculptor, printmaker, and painter. In addition to the Secession movements at the turn of the twentieth century, he is associated with the Symbolist movement of the latter half of the nineteenth century. The paper is lightly toned, and there is one very small spot near the lower edge of the paper in the blank margin; otherwise excellent. Bookseller Inventory # PR00053
