Synopsis:

In 1899, 7000 black migrant workers walked all the way from Johannesburg back to Natal to avoid being trapped by the looming Anglo-Boer War. The march was arranged and led by J S Marwick, an employee of the Natal government. This is a recreation of the long march home.

About the Author:

ELSABÉ BRINK is a cultural historian with a keen interest in the history of Johannesburg and Gauteng. In 1986 she completed an MA in History on Afrikaner women in the Garment Worker’s Union between 1918 and 1938.
