About this Item

International Publishers Trade Paperback Very Good. Bright scarlet cover white lettered, illustrated with sculpture by Daumier - believed to be a satire of the Emperor Louis Napoleon. Moderate edge-wear to extremities. Pages are bright with some underlining and para brackets. Contains: Author's Preface to the Second Edition, F. Engels's Preface to the Third German Edition, Marx to J. Weydemeyer, Letter of March 5, 1852. The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon (in German, Der 18te Brumaire des Louis Napoleon), an essay written by Karl Marx between December 1851 and March 1852, and originally published in 1852 in Die Revolution, a German monthly magazine published in New York and established by Joseph Weydemeyer. Later English editions (such as an 1869 Hamburg edition) were entitled The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte. This essay discusses the French coup of 1851 in which Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte assumed dictatorial powers. It shows Marx in his form as a social and political historian, treating actual historical events from the viewpoint of his materialist conception of history. Along with Marx's contemporary writings on English politics, the Eighteenth Brumaire is a principal source for understanding Marx's theory of the capitalist state. This translation of the Eighteenth Braumaire of Louis Bonaparte is based on the second edition (Hamburg, 1869) which was corrected by Karl Marx, and has been checked with the first edition (New York, 1852) and with the third edition (Hamburg, 1885). The present edition has also been checked with an earlier translation, edited by C.P. Dutt. International Publishing, New York. 2008 Later Printing of 1963 edition. 5.25" x 8" tall; 162pp. Indexed with Notes. Bookseller Inventory # 52147
