On offer is a super, historically interesting relic of early 20th Century railroading innovation and railroad building being the personal sketchbook and journal of an engineer, J. W. Lawler, working, we believe, with W.H. Miner whose engineering company was founded over 100 years ago and still bears his name. Here is a quote from the company website regarding Miner: "One hundred years after William H. Miner started the business, Miner is producing 6,000 new and reconditioned draft gears a month and a broad line of other products. In order to reach the century mark in this, or any other, industry, a company must consistently meet its customers' needs. This month, Miner Enterprises, Inc., celebrates its 100th anniversary of doing just that." Another source provides: "William H. Miner, inventor and philanthropist, patented a shock-absorbing device for railway cars known as the 201C Miner Tandem Draft Rigging. Both his story and your ride start at the Chazy Central Rural School adjacent to the Alice T. Miner Museum. Miner built the school which was the first central school established in the United States. Miner also built and equipped the Physicians Hospital and Kent-Delord House Museum in Plattsburgh while restoring the Alice T. Miner Colonial Collection in Chazy. The Miner Foundation also developed the William H. Miner Agriculture Research Institute in 1956. The institute and his old homestead, Hearts Delight Farm, located on Miner Farm Road, are open to the public. It is a working dairy farm with a variety of exhibits and Morgan horses. This part of the Champlain Valley is wide and relatively flat so the slight climb experienced when leaving the lake is pleasantly rewarded on your return."
