This dapper looking, cigar smoking gentleman had a rather scandal-ridden political career. After serving as Mayor of Seattle, and Theodore Roosevelt's Commissioner of the General Land Office, he became U. S. Secretary of the Interior in Taft's administration. His anti-conservation stance led to a big business grab of significant Western lands. The photo is by Kenneth Alexander and is signed and inscribed to Ashmun Brown, journalist and president of the prestigious Washington journalistic organization, The Gridiron Club.
