About this Item

The Portsmouth Priory School, now known as Portsmouth Abbey School is a boarding and day school run by the Catholic Benedictine order; Dom Leonard Sargent of Boston founded Portsmouth Priory in 1918 as one of three American houses in the congregation and the school was founded by Benedictine monk John Hugh Diman; the school has had a notable group of teachers and alumni. Group of material includes: a group of (5) real photo postcards dated 1928: depicting Fr. Francis, Fr. Adrian, the Abbot of Fort Augustus Abbey of Scotland, Mr. Patterson; interior of the chapel; exterior view of chapel, monastery, front door of dorm house (marked on front with key letters to identify); baseball field with students; monk's walkway to main house; these 5 all with 'Defender' diamond backstamp; (5) snapshots, 3 1/4" x 4" approx. size: class & teacher picture at the school, 1928; group of boys & master, taken by Fr. John Pane-Fox, all identified; group of boys in football uniform, taken Nov. 1929, identified and another football group with 4 identified players same date; Fitzhugh Diman O.S.B., 1930; group of (9) smaller snapshots, 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" approx. size: George Stephen Ryan O.S.B. in the driveway front of school 1928; interior of the chapel 1928; horses in the meadow at school; new building April 1930; old (dorm) house views, with letters on the images keying to explanation on backs and a view of the chapel door entrance & back of the monastery; (with) The Portsmouth Raven 1936 Winter Number, 34 + (14) pages of advertisements, black and white illustrated, literary & artistic efforts by the students, alumni, sporting & school notes; nicely printed on good quality wove paper at the Ward Printing Co. of Newport, Rhode Island, 8 1/4" x 11" approx. size, illustrated black & red paper over-wraps, chipped and chewed away at bottom edge & for a few pages, still good; (with) The Portsmouth Raven 1937 Spring Number, a more elaborate production, 32 + (16) pages of advertisements, (6) + (8) pages of black and white photo-illustrations, including portraits of graduating members at the front and photographic & artistic, literary efforts by the students & alumni, sporting & school notes; this issue with the well-wishes and signature of H. Leonard Sargent; 8 1/4" x 11" approx. size, illustrated black & red paper over-wraps, this with light wear; (and) a small printed flyer for the school Graduation Day 1941 with the program order, 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" size, old fold line, very good; overall, the group of photos & other material in good to very good condition.
