About this Item

We offer a signed etching by the American wildlife artist Richard E. Bishop. The plate size is 10 3/4" x 14 3/4" printed on white wove paper, 13" x 17 5/8". It is signed in graphite at the bottom right and titled On the Eastern Shore at the bottom left. In this wildlife study a happy flock of bluebill ducks take flight into an empty sky. Condition: The paper is cockled and toned at margins from old matting. There are some prominent areas of foxing, mostly at the margins. Remnants of old hinging tape on verso across the top. Richard Bishop (1887-1975) was an artist, author, photographer, and sportsman. As a young man he worked as an electrical engineer and factory manager. In 1920, with no formal training and a nearly reflexive impulse he made an etching on a discarded copper printing plate from the factory, etching the plate with a phonograph needle. A self reliant artist through and through, Bishop went on to build his own printing press for his limited editions. He was the original artist for the prestigious Federal Duck Stamp program at its inaugural in 1936. Bishop's paintings and prints are found in the Honolulu Art Museum, the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Bookseller Inventory # PR00091
