Synopsis: In 1944 Gabriella, Esther, and other young people see the impact of World War II on their lives in the United States.
From School Library Journal:
Gr 4-6-World War II America provides the backdrop in this continuation of the series as Gabriella (Italian-American), Esther (Anglo-American), and Ben (Japanese-American) experience life on the home front. Gabriella enjoys enormous success as she spearheads a letter-writing campaign to American soldiers serving overseas. Esther's scientist parents move to New Mexico to work on a project surreptitiously referred to as "it"; Esther does some amateur sleuthing and discovers that they are working on the atom bomb. Ben's only purpose appears to be to exemplify America's racist attitude and treatment of Japanese-Americans at this time. These three characters' lives are loosely interrelated and fail to form a cohesive story line. Each one of them encounters a major historical figure in the most coincidental manner. Esther meets Dr. Oppenheimer when he attends one of her parents' dinner parties. She overhears an elusive conversation and uncovers a secret that German spies cannot. Numerous references to popular culture such as music, WWII propaganda, films, etc. are woven into the text throughout. Photographic family trees; a "Things That Really Happened" section; and black-and-white photos depicting characters, cities, and related subjects contribute a semblance of realism to the book.-Laura Glaser, Euless Junior High School, TX
