In April of 1967, Jesse Owens gave a speech at Unionville High School in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, entitled "Youth in the Aerospace Age." It was part of the Hadley Memorial Fund's lecture series, intended to provide free education and entertainment programs for the community. The Hadley Fund paid Owens $160.89 for his speech and related expenses, and he signed his full name on the verso of their check (which measures approximately 2 3/4" x 6 1/4") before depositing it. Owens stayed at a hotel in nearby Wilmington, Delaware, while in the area for the lecture, and the receipt from the hotel is included here along with a program and a ticket for the event. Jesse Owens (1913-1980) was an outstanding African-American track and field athlete in the 1930s. He set a number of world records while competing in high school, collegiate, and other competitions culminating in the 1936 Olympics where he won four gold medals. There is a small smudge on the cover of the program, but each of the items is otherwise in excellent condition. Bookseller Inventory #
