About this Item

Presumed first edition (no additional printings listed). Staplebound, 7 ½ x 10 ½ inches, 58 pp, a few black and white drawings concerning the Adolphus Tenderizer. Paperback, very good+. Moderate shelf wear, 1/2 inch tear at foot of spine, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked. Although most of the recipes are relatively mainstream, the author himself was rather controversial and was taken to court several times by the government. "The Adolphus Tenderizer was a waterless cookware system that was marketed in the 1940s by Adolphus Hohensee, a self-proclaimed nutritional expert and health lecturer. Although early on he proclaimed himself to be an MD, he had no prior formal training in this area. As a lecturer, he was one of many who preached that the path to good health was through good nutrition. He promoted the use of vitamins, minerals and healthful cooking methods as a way to overcome the defects of the American food supply and processed foods. He had a farm near Scranton, Pennsylvania named El Rancho Adolphus where he raised Hereford beef cattle and sold and distributed the El Rancho Adolphus brand of milk, buttermilk, butter and cheese. His other products were available in health food stores and through the mail. He gave lectures throughout the U. S. And while he did not specifically promote his own products in the lectures, he made sure that they were easily available to those who were interested. Hohensee had many run-ins with the law and the FDA about his business practices, but this did not stop him from lecturing and profiting from the sale of his items. The original cost of the Adolphus Tenderizer was $195. The Tenderizer was made of stainless steel and consisted of 19 pieces. Hard to find; no copies of OCLC Cookbook; cook book; alternative medicine. Bookseller Inventory # 41638

Store Description

Nestled in a valley in the Endless Mountains, where the temperature can dip below freezing even in mid-June, sits Frost Pocket Farm. While our harvest of organic produce may be subject to the whims of nature, the crop of books is always a good one. The selection is as varied as the interests of its proprietor. A native of NYC, who dissipated his youth and more mature years in used bookstores and reading, as well as earning degrees in history, biology, banking and counseling plus studying 2 years at the University of Paris, he is constantly acquiring quaint and curious volumes, as well as the more mundane, on every imaginable subject. Low overhead means low prices geared towards the trade and the savvy retail client. To the extent possible, we use recycled packaging material (economy and ecology are both dervied from the same Greek root), and all books are shipped in corrugated cardboard. Every attempt is made to accurately describe the books, including their faults, and everything is completely guaranteed! (Sorry, we are strictly mail order, and due to insurance and other concerns cannot accomodate visitors.) On-line booksellers since 1996; ancient for this business!
