About this Item

Various formats and paginations. Figs., charts. Bound together in quarter black calf, calf corners, cloth sides, gilt spine, decorative end-leaves; rebacked with kozo paper, simple spine label. Very good. PIONEERING WORK IN CANCER GENETICS. FIRST SEPARATE EDITIONS, for the most part (one a French-language translation and another the De Lamar Lectures for 1928-1929, both alternate versions of Garrison and Morton 2652, which is included in this grouping). "By selective breeding over a period of 15 years, Slye produced generations of mice absolutely resistant to, or particularly susceptible to, cancer. She demonstrated that resistance is a Mendelian dominant and susceptibility a recessive, either of which can be bred into or out of susceptible or resistant generations, according to the laws of genetics." Garrison and Morton 2652. "The most striking and significant experimentation was that of Maude Slye (Chicago) who by selective breeding of mice showed that resistance to malignancy is a Mendelian dominant, susceptibility a recessive, which can either of them be bred into or out of susceptible or resistant generations according to the laws of genetics (1913-28). Thus cancer may be a superimposed or acquired diathesis which can be stimulated to malignant activity by local irritation, even from micro-organisms or parasites." - Garrison. DSB, XIV, p. 252 (Wells, citing this research); Garrison, History of medicine, p. 723; Garrison and Morton 2652 (citing "Cancer and heredity," Annals Internal Medicine, Vol. 1, 1928, and 6 others of the articles offered here); Long, History of pathology, p. 178.
