About this title

Synopsis:

Fourth grader Andrew thinks he has it made when he finds a genie that can grant his every wish, until he realizes that each wish only lasts for twenty-four hours.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-4-- Andrew can scarcely believe his eyes when he finds Jo, a real live genie, in a shoe-polish bottle that his adventuring uncle has left behind. However, the road to wish-granting never runs smoothly, and Andrew discovers that the math homework answers and the perfect new bike, which had appeared so easily, simply vanish the next day. The genie's magic lasts precisely 24 hours, and he cannot make the same magic twice. Nonetheless, before Uncle Donald returns and whisks him off to the Arctic, Jo, through some magic and a little trickery, is able to raise Andrew's self-confidence and help him make new friends. Jo is definitely a genie with personality, and it is fun to watch Andrew coping with the 24-hour time limit on wishes. This humorous, light addition to the series is aimed at the same transitional readers who enjoyed Hazel Hutchins' The Three and Many Wishes of Jason Reid (Viking, 1988) and Catling's The Chocolate Touch (Morrow, 1979). --Tatiana Castleton, Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library, CA
