Photograph sizes range from 2.25 x 2.25 to7 x 5, with the exception of the panoramic group photo of the battalion which is oblong 24 x 8. Included are three photo folders, 3.25 x 5, processed by Bear Photo Service (San Francisco). Overall condition: light creasing, wear and curling, abrasion to one photo else very good, group photograph is creased, torn, spotted on reverse, cello tape. Majority are labeled with a few dupes. Shown are France with 109 photos of Chalons Sur Marne, Camp Chalons, Beaune, Commercy, Marseille, Nancy, Paris, St. Nazaire, St. Victoret, Village of ARS Sur Maselle, Metz; Germany 52 photographs of Bienau, Berchestegaden (road to), Bliesdalheim, Frankfort, Hamm, Munich, Passau; Austria with 30 photos of Linz, Salzburg; Belgium with 17 photographs of Antwerp/Camp Top Hat, Liege: New Orleans/Van Buren, Arkansas with 42 photographs of him and his buddies in uniform, marching in Van Buren, etc.; family photos (in the San Francisco area) 26 total; group photograph and 4 miscellaneous photos. In France there are views of bomb damage, a buzz bomb, P38 Interceptor, off limits area in Marseilles, Eiffel Tower, French women collaborators during the liberation of Paris (naked and paint spattered and stared at by a large crowd), three of General Patton (1 dupe); Germany: bombing damage, 30th field artillery, German fighter plane; Austria: bombing damage to railways, in Linz a funeral and Austrians buying Christmas trees; Belgium: Camp Top Hat, the last stopf in the ETO. Also included is a "Combination Score Book for US Rifles M1903 and M1 and Browning Automatic Rifle M1918A2," partially filled in and a Christmas card from "Advance Section" and signed by the photographer of this collection. The 733rd Railway Operating Battalion was formed in New Orleans on November 23, 1943; later in the month the battalion arrived at Camp Jesse Turner in Van Buren, Arkansas. The camp was established to train the soldiers to learn how to operate railroads captured in enemy territory. They left in June of 1944 arriving in France not long after June 6.
