PROVENANCE: Jack McCarthy's estate. A leading Boston sports writer, he covered the Red Sox, Bruins, and boxing events for the Herald, Herald-Traveler, and Herald-American for 30 years and was a member of the Baseball Writers' Association of America, Boston Chapter, from 1965. Later, he worked in public relations for the Boston Red Sox. In 1970, he was Chair of the Boston Chapter. MASTERS: 1) Handwritten on dark fawn paper, notes on overnight accommodations for twelve attendees, including Tony Conigliaro, recipient of the Comeback of the Year Award, noted in pen & ink as Tony, and Marvin Miller, Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players Association; both placed in suites with 3 rooms. / 2) An updated head table seating list for thirty three guests, different from the published head table list for 34, and accounting for the absence of Joe Cronin and Mark Belanger and the addition of Jesse Owens, and with a handwritten note in the top margin on overnight accommodations for 3 other attendees, including former Red Sox player, Ken 'Hawk' Harrelson. / 3) An updated awards sheet, different from the published list, corrected to show Jesse Owens would accept the Judge Emil Fuchs Memorial Award for Joe Cronin. / 4) and 5) Two copies of the event program and speaker timetable, one with check notations and a correction regarding late addition, Earl Weaver. INSERT: white card stock with the Boston Red Sox 1970 schedule of home games printed in pine green letters on one side. Pages: bright and clean, except page 1 with bottom margin spot, p. 7 with toning (from laid-in sheet), p. 14 with bottom edge spot. / Wrappers: scattered minor spots and slight soiling; upper side with trace edge wear, lower side with bottom corner crease. / Binding: Excellent / Insert: Very Good / Event Sheets: Good to Very Good: folds and some slight handling marks, one sheet with some outer edge wear, light toning to top half of two sheets, a narrow band of toning in inner margin of another. PAGINATION: Complete; 14 unnumbered pages, illustrated with 5 full-page, captioned portrait drawings in white and two shades of green, celebrating awards to, Rico Petrocelli, for Red Sox MVP (by Bob Coyne), Joe Cronin, for the Judge Emil Fuchs Memorial Award for meritorious service (by Vic Johnson), Tony Conigliaro, for Comeback of the Year Award, (by Leo White), Ray Culp, for Most Valuable Red Sox Pitcher (by Bill Robertson), and Mike Nagy, for Red Sox Rookie of the Year (by Phil Bissell). FORMAT: Publisher's booklet with white wrappers in the 2-staples saddle binding, title letters in white and three shades of green, upper side decorated with the BBWAA logo, lower side with a Schaefer Beer ad. SIZE: 9 x 6.75 inches. CONTENTS: 1970 award winners and previous award winners from 1938; head table guests, Boston chapter lists, including Board of Directors, officers, production committees, and the complete list of sportswriter, and honorary members of the Boston chapter since its 1938 inception, and the in memoriam page. ATTENDEES: Red Sox players: Mike Andrews, Tony Conigliaro, Ray Culp, Sparky Lyle, Mike Nagy, Gary Peters, Rico Petrocelli, Reggie Smith, and Carl Yastrzemski. Others of note: Ken Harrelson, Richie Hebner, Mike Higgins, Ralph Houk, Frank Howard, Harmon Killebrew, Ned Martin, Marvin Miller, Bill Veek, and Earl Weaver.
