[1] (title), [2] (cast list and table of contents), 3-173, [i] (blank) pp. Lithographed. Calligraphic text in German and Italian. Plate number to foot of pp. 3-6 only. Binder's label to lower inner margin of upper pastedown. Binding somewhat worn and rubbed. Occasional very light foxing; remnants of early gray paper binding to blank inner margin of title and final page. In very good condition overall. Revised version. Köchel, p. 372. RISM M4193. Not in Hoboken or Hirsch. Idomeneo, with a libretto by Giambattista Veresco after Antoine Danchet, was first performed on January 29, 1781 at the Residenz Theater in Munich. "Having completed nine operatic works, Mozart, aged twenty-four, was commissioned to write an opera by the Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria, formerly of Mannheim, who had moved to Munich in January 1778. He began work in Salzburg in October 1780 and moved to Munich in November to complete the work with the singers, several of whom he knew from Mannheim days. The opera was successful but there were no further performances in other houses and the amateur performance in Vienna took place five years later." Robbins Landon: The Mozart Companion, p. 248. "The outstanding Heckel publications in the [H. Baron] collection are four piano arrangements of Mozart operas: 'Die Zauberfloete,' 'Die Gaertnerin aus Liebe,' 'Idomeneo,' and 'Die Hochzeit des Figaro'. The title-pages of all four publications are impressive pieces of craftsmanship by any standards and were executed with great confidence and precision. Taken as a group, these Mozart title-pages are among the most ambitious pieces of lithography in the collection. " Michael Twyman: Early Lithographed Music, pp. 339-341 (including facsimile of title page). An attractive example of music lithography. Bookseller Inventory # 25770
