Description:

FIRST EDITION, printed by William M. Cheney, engraving by Dan Taylor, binding by Bela Blau, Foreword by Glen Dawson. Miniature Book. 3 inches x 2 1/4 inches. iv, 29, [3] pp. Title-page with rules in the shape of a T to mark the intersection, illustrated throughout with engravings by Dan Taylor; text clean, unmarked. Quarter black cloth, patterned paper over boards, gilt spine title, dust-jacket with cover illustration on the front and price on the front flap; binding square and tight, jacket with very minor thumbing on front flap, else fine. With an additional illustration and gift inscription by Tom Neal on the front free end-paper, dated Veterans Day 1965. Fine. This is the first appearance in print of drawings centered on the world in and around Dawson's Book Shop after a forty year career as a book seller, much of them at Dawson's. Brings to life the Los Angeles of 50 cents an hour parking, cops patrolling their beats on foot, newsies hawking the Evening Herald, and the Statler Hotel offered the most upscale lodgings in the neighborhood. Neal worked at Dawson's Book Shop for 30 years as a cataloger and appraiser where he amused customers with drawings in the margins of his quote letters. Inscribed on the front flyleaf in the month of publication with a colored drawing by Neal, who signed as "TAN."
