The eman airborne troops of World War 2 were one of the legendary fighting forces of that epic period, still well recognised from those days even by younger generations born years afterwards. The spectacular air drops in Belgium and HOlland in 1940, then a new and previously unheard of element of the Blitzkrieg type of warfare, had an impact of fear and alarm which was rather more effective than some of the actual military results achieved. The imagery of hundreds of soldiers parachuting into actdion from swarms of aircraft was a type of warfare that not even science fiction writers had envisaged. And the sharp new funtional combat dress they wore was fearful and alarming compared to service dress anyone had seen before. Old newsreels of German parachute landings in 1940 in war history documentaires still thrill and capture the imagination when seen today. The German parachute operations of 1940 had an influence on British defenmce attitudes and preparationsn when Britain was next, inn theory, inline to be invaded. And the Geerman airborne activities also caused both the British and United States armies to raise their own airborne forces in 1941-42, largely based on the German example and ideas. But as this book shows, ;there limitations to the value of airborne operations, even for the pioneers of this type of warfare. Synopsis: Officially a part of the Luftwaffe, Germany's parachute units were organized into the 7th Flieger Division in July 1938 under General Kurt Student. In the German invasion of France and the Low Countries in 1940 the parachute units stunned the world and laid the basis for an airborne mystique that has endured to the present day. The division also fought in Norway, Greece and Crete before surrendering in Italy in 1945. Each Spearhead title includes an evaluation of the units combat effectiveness as seen by the unit, its opponents and subsequent researchers, and a research section including a bibliography and a listing of museums, websites, re-enactment groups and memorials.

Product Description: The new Spearhead series looks at the cutting edge of war, dealing with units capable of operating independently in the forefront of battle. Covers the unit's origins and history, organisation and order of battle, battle history theatre by theatre, insignia and markings. Vol. 3 is on the German 7th Flieger Division.
