The smooth wearing away of the metal .by the action of the hot gases is termed "gas erosion". This removal of metal is caused by a combination of the movement of the gases, the heating of the steel, and a chemical action. Both lands and grooves are affected, but the action is usually greater on the lands at the commencement of rifling. The greatest gas erosion per round fired generally occurs initially and then decreases with subsequent firing. In the early stages of gas erosion, the lands be come rounded at the edges.
