Colin Hawkins was educated at art school in the north of England and then worked as an illustrator/designer for the Daily Express before becoming an illustrator for magazines and advertising. He began to illustrate children's books in 1978, and from 1979 onwards he has created his own children's books with his wife, Jacqui, who also studied graphic design at college. They both share the desire to "make children's books funnier".From Publishers Weekly:
Hawkins's hilariously manic artwork is the best reason to open this trio of Scary Pop-Up books. The bug-eyed characters-much more silly than spooky-have gobs of ghoulish charm. The small 4"34" format fits nicely into small hands and many of the inventive paper constructions are hardy enough to withstand treatment from overeager fingers. But the disjointed, bubble-brained text adds little to the fun: "A witch on her broom/ with cat and mouse...[sic] / so take good care/ and stay in your house!" Ages 5-up.
