Nathaniel Starbuck is a rebel, a young Yankee fighting for the South against the North in the American Civil War. It is the summer of 1861 when Nate arrives in Richmond, Virginia, suddenly to be rescued from a lynch mob by Washington Faulconer who is raising his own Legion in the interests of the Confederacy. Personal and political loyalties are tested to the limit, and Nate quickly learns to fight in his own interests and those of his adopted country and friends while the United States of America tears itself violently, unforgivingly apart in the first bloody battles of the Civil War.

Bernard Cornwell was born in London, raised in Essex and now lives in the USA. In addition to the Sharpe series, he is the author of the Arthurian series, the Warlord Chronicles; the Starbuck Chronicles on the American Civil War; Stonehenge; Gallows Thief; the Grail Quest series; and his new series, set during the reign of King Alfred. From AudioFile:
Cornwell, who is best known for his Richard Sharpe series, begins a new series, which takes place during the War Between the States. Nathaniel Starbuck is the son of a well-known Boston abolitionist preacher. Starbuck finds himself stuck in Virginia in April 1861 and becomes a Rebel, but more out of rebellion against his father than out of belief in states' rights. Actor Hayward Morse displays his versatile vocal skills by giving almost every character a distinct voice. His depiction of the battle scenes brings out the horror, confusion and excitement of the dramatic narrative. His enthusiasm for this work is apparent, and he does well in bringing out its comic elements. This is a joy for those who enjoy adventure. M.T.F. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
