Kindergarten-Grade 2 --An invitation to a free night at Rosso's restaurant falls from Leo's cereal box into his bowl one morning. That very evening, Leo, along with his parents, gets formally dressed and has a lovely dinner at the restaurant. In the course of the evening, he finds a lady's lost diamond earring and gets the dessert of his choice, but only after his mother steals the show by asking her waiter to dance--a slightly odd and disconcerting touch. Everyone, of course, has a ripping good time, including Mr. Rosso himself, who invites the family back for another night as his guests. The text is slight, composed entirely of conversation framed in dialogue balloons. Although set in a cartoon format, the story never lives up to its comic potential, remaining flat and uninteresting. The spirited watercolors display a nice ease of execution and fluidity of movement, but fail to add anything to the story. The promised fun is just never realized. --Linda Boyles, Alachua County Lib . District, Gainesville, FL
