Synopsis

When film tycoon, Sir Robert Hellier, loses his daughter to heroin, he declares war on the drug peddlers. London drug specialist, Nicholas Warren, is called in to organise an expedition to the Middle East, in an attempt to track down the big-time dope runners, inveigle themselves into their confidence and make them an offer they can't refuse. No expense is spared in the plans for their capture, but with a hundred million dollars worth of heroin at stake, the 'spoilers' must use methods as ruthless as their prey.

About the Author

Desmond Bagley was born in 1923, in Kendal, a rural town in England's scenic Lake District. He left school aged fourteen and worked for a number of years in the aircraft industry before embarking on an adventure - travelling to South Africa by road and supporting himself along the way by working in gold and asbestos mines. Bagley spent the Fifties in South Africa, working as a freelance journalist and critic, before moving to Italy with his wife, Margaret, and then to Guernsey. His first novel, The Golden Keel, was based on a true story overheard by Bagley in a bar in Johannesburg, about Mussolini's vast personal riches and the men who went looking for it. It was published in 1963 to great acclaim and followed by a further fifteen popular adventure ovels. Bgley's career spanned two decades and his influence can be seen in the work of several highly respected thriller writers. When he died, in 1983, his final novel, Juggernaut, was completed by his wife.

From AudioFile

This slightly improbable story of a scheme to stop a massive drug smuggling operation translates beautifully to the audio format. Nigel Davenport portrays protagonist Nick Warren, the London doctor who is a "combination St. George and James Bond," capturing his intensity and dynamism with great charm. The cast, several of whom follow the "honor among thieves" adage, provides ample opportunity for Davenport's considerable talent. For some characters he uses subtle inflection while others are given a rich, full accent. Even the cadence and speech of the sole American is captured with aplomb. The story's action and the aural characterizations make a highly successful combination. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
