This "autobiography" of Carretto was compiled by his close friend and literary executor, Gian Carlo Sibilia. For 25 years Sibilia was entrusted with the editing of his writings. Sibilia records the experiences of Carretto's life from his writings and his own recollections. Carretto emerges as a spiritual giant of the 20th-century Church, committed to a path of holy poverty and prayer. Carlo Carretto was born in Alessandria, Piedmont, Italy, on April 2nd 1910. He was the third of six children, four of whom entered the religious life. Trained as a teacher, in 1945 he was summoned to Rome by Pope Pius XII to organize the National Association of Catholic Teachers. In 1946 he became president of Catholic Youth Action and later, of Catholic Action. He resigned in 1953 after yet another dispute with the Italian Right and joined the Little Brothers of Jesus in Algeria. He spent ten years in their community in the desert before returning to lead another community in Perugia, Italy. He built a thriving community until his death in 1988. Gian Carlo Sibilia is the prior of the Little Brothers and Little Sisters of the Communita Jesus Caritas and director of the spiritual magazine, "Famiglia Charles de Foucauld".
