9780007272433: The Street Philosopher

Thomas Kitson, one-time metropolitan art critic, arrives at the battlefields of the Crimea as the London Courier's man on the ground. The last thing the commanding officers want is a newspaperman getting in the way, asking difficult questions. Then he is witness to an act of unbelievable treachery and betrayal and, as Sebastopol burns, Kitson flees to England, trying to escape the atrocities. He becomes a 'street philosopher' reporting on the Manchester scene for the society pages, but as Manchester prepares to welcome Queen Victoria the past catches up with Kitson and he finds himself under threat from old friends and new enemies...

Review:

Praise for THE STREET PHILOSOPHER:`A galloping good story' The Times`Lust, avarice, envy, revenge all play their part in this brilliantly told, well-paced story, which also begs the question, so relevant today, of just how close to action journalists and recorders of war should be allowed' Daily Mail`Plampin's historical research is impressive, as is his command of detail....his true gift of descriptive power'Independent on Sunday
