9780007278572: British Game (Collins New Naturalist Library)

The aim of this series is to interest the general reader in the wildlife of Britain by recapturing the enquiring spirit of the old naturalists, encouraging unusual and original developments of forgotten or neglected facets of British natural history. Collins are delighted to announce the republication in facsimile form of the first editions of the very first volumes in the New Naturalist Library. Originally planned in the darkest days of World War II and first published in 1945, this series is the longest running nature series in the world. It is a reflection of the quality of the authors and the books they wrote, that they are still sought after 73 years later. The books will be identical in every way to the original first editions, including the iconic jackets by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis.

About the Author:

1900-1981. Writer, editor and professional countryman, author of British Game (1946). Prolific author of books on wildlife, pets, country sports, gardening etc. Editor of The Field 1938-46. Veteran broadcaster (Field Fare 1940-5, There and Back 1947-9) and newspaper and magazine columnist. Numerous interests included fairgrounds, gypsies and boxing; sympathies emraced poachers as well as gamekeepers.

Review:

'The whole book, ranging from birds and beasts of game to keepers and the future of schooling, is encyclopaedic. With its many plates in colour and black and white it is a book without which a naturalist's library is empty.' The Field 'Clear, concise, and indicative of his gifts of observation and deduction. A most thoughtful and delightful book. It is enhanced by more than a hundred photographs and coloured illustrations by famous bygone and contemporary sporting artists.' Country Life
