In 1959, agents acting for British Intelligence mastermind the famous escape of the Dalai Lama from Tibet. Three years later, Whitehall is again behind a spectacular secret mission against the occupying Chinese Forces... Paul Chavasse is persuaded to return because he is the only man who knows about Tibet. Knows about the evil its oppressors are capable of. Knows just about enough to bring a vitally important scientist back to the West alive. Chavasse thought he was aware of the risks. An illegal plane flight through the high Himalayas, a dangerous rendezvous with the Tibetan freedom fighters, almost certain confrontation with a trigger-happy army. But success is never a certainty. Not when your soul is almost destroyed by a cruel and vicious captor. And not when your heart is in thrall to the beautiful women who may aid your betrayal...

About the Author:
Since The Eagle Has Landed―one of the biggest-selling thrillers of all time―every novel Jack Higgins has written has become an international bestseller. He has had simultaneous number-one bestsellers in hardcover and paperback, and many of his books have been made into successful movies, including The Eagle Has Landed, To Catch a King, On Dangerous Ground, Eye of the Storm, and Thunder Point. He has degrees in sociology, social psychology, and economics from the University of London, and a doctorate in media from Leeds Metropolitan University. A fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and an expert scuba diver and marksman, Higgins lives in Jersey on the Channel Islands.
From AudioFile:
Paul Chavasse, head of MI5, is about to retire when he meets a Tibetan monk who asks about his rescue of Dr. Karl Hoffner from Tibet. As Chavasse recounts his adventure in 1960, Higgins covers the politics of China, Tibet, and Russia, as well as their political relations with Britain and the United States. Patrick MacNee follows the complex plots and action, switching from British English to representations of English by Russian, Tibetan, and Chinese characters. Although the representations seem true to life, they're a little stilted, and MacNee seems to have problems keeping the characterizations consistent, causing the listener to question which speaker is talking. MacNee brings the Cold War and its strange bedfellows to life with Higgins's words and myriad plots. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
