Justine is a classic novel by Donatien Alphonse François de Sade, better known as the Marquis de Sade. Justine is set just before the French Revolution in France and tells the story of a young woman. Her story is recounted while defending herself for her crimes, en route to punishment and death. She explains the series of misfortunes which have led her to be in her present situation. The plot concerns Justine, a 12-year-old maiden who sets off, to make her way in France. It follows her until age 26, in her quest for virtue. She is presented with abuse, hidden under a virtuous mask. The unfortunate situations include: the time when she seeks refuge and confession in a monastery, but is forced to become a sex-slave to the monks, who subject her to countless orgies, rapes and other abuses. When helping a gentleman who is robbed in a field, he takes her back to his chateau with promises of a post caring for his wife, but she is then confined in a cave and subject to much the same punishment.

Product Description:

Justine was an early work of the Marquis de Sade, written while imprisoned in the Bastille. It contains relatively little of the obscenity which characterized his later writing. Napoleon Bonaparte called Justine "the most abominable book ever engendered by the most depraved imagination." Bonaparte ordered the arrest of Sade who as a result was incarcerated for the last 13 years of his life. Justine is set just before the French Revolution in France and tells the story of a young woman who goes under the name of Therese. Her story is recounted to Madame de Lorsagne while defending herself for her crimes, en route to punishment and death. She explains the series of misfortunes which have led her to be in her present situation. Classic erotic fiction.

Product Description:

‘Justine’ was the Marquis de Sade's first novella, written in 1787, whilst imprisoned for two weeks in the Bastille. Although published anonymously, de Sade was eventually indicted for blasphemy and obscenity (without trial) for the authorship of ‘Justine’ at the behest of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Who suffers in the pursuit of desire?

The Countess de Lorsange reveals her history, in a tavern, to a young woman named Therese; where a young girl and her sister fight a battle of morality. Set in a period before the French Revolution, Justine shows the battle of virtue versus vice, where earning your keep takes on fresh connotations, and a titled lady holds a lifetime of illicit secrets.

Book Description Harper Perennial. 1 Paperback(s), 2005. soft. Book Condition: New. Also known as The Misfortunes of Virtue, the Marquis de Sade's 1791 novel blends gothic scenarios with scathing philosophical commentary. Seeking shelter at a monastery, 12-year-old Justine finds herself held captive by the monks, who subject her to prolonged physical and sexual abuse. Although she eventually escapes, the girl's belief in human goodness makes her easy prey for a long line of individuals eager to exploit her in any way possible; does freedom finally await her, or a greater punishment still? Incensed by this book, Napoleon Bonaparte had de Sade arrested, and the irrepressible nobleman spent the final years of his life in an asylum. 218. Bookseller Inventory # 70503
