Alex Southmayd was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and raised in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. He is currently a senior at Groton School, a prep school in Groton, Massachusetts, where he is Vice President of the Debate Team, a head board member of the Groton Community Service Board, a writer for the school newspaper, a trumpeter in the Jazz Band, and a member of the Varsity squash team. He is a solid student and scored 800, 800, and 770 on the Critical Read ing, Writing, and Math - ematics sections of the SAT, respectively. The author also earned the designation of AP Scholar with Distinction from the College Board's Advance Placement Program. His favorite area of study is foreign languages, and he enjoys playing squash, playing trumpet, debating, writ - ing, and travel ing. He is a lifeguard, and he currently lives in Boston.
