This book is designed for three purposes. First, it is a textbook suitable for advanced undergraduates, honor students, and graduate students. Indeed, any one of its three major sections comprises a full course in itself; the introductory section gives a treatment of the mathematics necessary to a study of population biology beyond the elementary level. Second, it is both a synthesis and a compendium of new ideas and suggestions for future research. Finally, the book provides an extensive review of the key literature through 1982 and so should serve as a useful reference source. (Preface)
