9780026058605: Lisa and David Today: Their Healing Journey from Childhood and Pain into Love and Life
From School Library Journal:

YALisa and David Today is two books in one. It opens with a reprint of the novel Lisa and David (Macmillan, 1961; o.p.), the story of two severely disturbed teenagers in a mental institution who start each other on the path to recovery. The second part of the book brings their story up to date 25 years later, after Lisa and David meet again. She has been married and divorced; David is a psychiatrist working in the same institution in which they met. He has been unable to form any lasting relationships. When they meet, they decide that they would like to start a new life together, but problems arise when Lisa wants David to leave the institution, which David is reluctant to do. The original story remains as fresh, undated, and emotionally touching today as it was 25 years ago. The problems of the teenagers are dramatic and vividly conveyed. It is, or should be, a YA classic. The second part is more static and descriptive. Lisa and David's problems are not all that different from other couples'. Conversations are sprinkled with psychiatric jargon that was absent in the first part, except in the "case histories" at the end of the book. However, there is the appeal of knowing what happened to the two in later life. Libraries that have the original version of Lisa and David may want to stay with that, but those that do not may want to get this version with the "whole story." Betsy Shorb, PGCMLS, Md.

From Publishers Weekly:

This slim volume reissues psychiatrist Rubin's novelette about two emotionally disturbed teenagers, Lisa and David, plus a sequel taking their lives to the present. The original volume details David and Lisa's stay in a residential treatment center and their mutually therapeutic friendship. In the sequel, David, now a doctor at the institution where they were patients, hears from Lisa, who yearns to see him for the first time in 20 years. Their meeting initiates a romance. Tension between them is generated, however, when Lisa implores David to leave the center, where he is contently sequestered from the "real world" she relishes. Again, Rubin includes clinical details of their respective psychological profiles. He writes upliftingly of the couple's courageous recuperation, and their efforts to reconcile their disparate lifestyles. 50,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo; author tour.
